CHAPTER 8

"Live in two minutes, sir," one of Reggie's assistants informed him.

Reggie, the president and CEO of Aion Sciences, had to address the residents of the Gaea Ark. He had no choice at this point. There had been too much chaos aboard the ship and outside of it in the past few weeks. He couldn't keep his mouth shut, especially if he wanted to beat the New Truth to the punch.

"I really don't want to do this," Reggie squirmed in his seat, visibly uncomfortable. The thought of making the address made him uneasy. The perfectly tailored suit felt suffocating, and the heat from the lighting lamps added to his discomfort.

"But you need to," Gideon insisted. After the incident with the rampaging creature that many residents witnessed, Gideon had convinced Reggie that covering it up would do more harm than good. He argued that transparency would benefit both the company and the morale of the ship.

"I know. I know. Still doesn't mean I have to be thrilled about it." Reggie glanced at his bloody right hand, irritated by the distraction. Maddox was engrossed in a conversation on her DD, appearing visibly angry. "Do me a favor and see what's up with her. It's damn distracting."

Gideon reluctantly agreed. As Reggie's subordinate, he had to fulfill his duties.

Maddox's voice filled the room with frustration as she spoke to someone. "How does a little girl just get away!?"

"Maddox," Gideon attempted to get her attention, but she held up a hand, signaling him to wait. Her dismissive gesture infuriated him.

"Either you find her, or it'll be you locked up in the brig instead. You understand? Yeah? Then why are we still talking? Get it done. End call." Maddox turned towards Gideon, clearly in a bad mood. "What do you want, Gideon?"

Suppressing a smile at Maddox's evident frustration and failure, Gideon responded, "The boss wants to know what's going on."

"What? Nothing. If he wants to know so bad, he can ask himself."

"He asked me to help you. So..."

"Jesus ... fine. We lost her. Okay? We lost her!"

"Lost who?" Gideon genuinely had no idea about Maddox's activities. Their roles within Aion Sciences were separate, and communication between them was rare.

"Don't worry about it. Just tell him, okay? That's what this is about."

Gideon disliked the fact that Reggie trusted Maddox. He despised her presence within the company, as her immoral actions tainted both Aion Sciences and his own work, particularly when she used his security officers for her misdeeds.

“She said she lost her," Gideon informed Reggie, watching his face for any reaction. However, Reggie was too nervous about addressing the residents of the ark to reveal anything through his expression.

"God damnit," Reggie muttered.

"Who did she lose?" Gideon asked, hoping that Reggie might unintentionally divulge some information with his guard down.

"Just one of those New Truth assholes," Reggie answered.

"You're on in thirty seconds, sir," Reggie's assistant informed him.

"What? You had Maddox take some woman and torture her? Is that it?"

"Yeah, something like that. Can we talk about this later?"

"Fifteen seconds.
